MADE-TO-MEASURE EXPERIENCES

CYCLING WITH ITINERANTUR

| THE MARITIME GREENWAY |

For centuries after the Middle Ages, the Mediterranean coasts were frequently attacked by Barbary corsairs, who plundered cities and villages and kidnapped thousands of people. The Christian kingdoms, to counter this threat, decided to fortify the coastline with a series of castles, towers, armed forces, etc.

As we cycle along this special route, we’ll see several important fortifications and will uncover some of the secrets that lie behind them. In the Mediterranean, as we always say at Itinerantur, history and culture go hand in hand with nature, with this largely influencing our development as a civilisation – including pirates. We’ll observe many natural characteristics of this privileged stretch of coastline linking Oropesa and Benicàssim which once facilitated the Barbary raids, making these bays, coves and cliffs potentially dangerous locations due to the activity of seafaring criminals.
