CYCLING WITH ITINERANTUR
| THE OJOS NEGROS GREENWAY: IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF EL CID |
This route follows the footsteps of El Cid Campeador during his conquest of Valencia. When he came down from Teruel with his men, he largely followed the course of the Palancia River. This allowed him to provide his men with the most precious commodity of all civilisations and all times: water.
Caudiel marks the spot where we will set off on the Ojos Negros Greenway: the longest of its kind in Spain, which formerly held the Sierra Menera mining railroads. At the beginning we’ll be accompanied, on both sides of the track, by dense orchards and clusters of fruit trees, before passing through tunnels and skirting by ponds. Along the way, we’ll see how the vegetation changes on our approach to Jérica, with dry land surrounding the famous Torre de las Campanas with the Sierra de Espadán serving as a backdrop. Before arriving in Navajas, we’ll also have the chance to see the Regajo reservoir. At the end of the day, we’ll understand why the natural richness of this area made El Cid – and Itinerantur – opt for this route.
